Struggling to Drink Enough Water? Here’s How to Stay Hydrated Every Day

We all know we should drink more water, but let’s be real, many of us just forget. You start your day strong with a glass, maybe even two, but by lunchtime you’re neck-deep in work or chores and realize your bottle hasn’t moved an inch. Sound familiar? You’re not alone.

Hydration doesn’t have to be a struggle, and in this post, I’ll show you realistic and sustainable ways to make drinking water easier and more enjoyable. These are the tips that have worked for me and the women I guide through Simple Nutrition.

Why Staying Hydrated Is Important for Your Health

Before we get into how, let’s remind ourselves why. Drinking enough water helps with:

  • Digestion and regular bowel movements
  • Clear, glowing skin
  • Increased energy levels
  • Fewer headaches and cravings
  • Better focus and mood

Hydration is literally the foundation of your wellness.

Fun fact: Your gut needs water to break down and absorb nutrients. If your digestion feels sluggish, start by increasing your water intake before jumping to expensive probiotics.

1. Make Water the First Thing You Reach For

One of the easiest ways to improve your water intake is to drink it first thing in the morning. Place a glass by your bed or kitchen sink, and make it the first thing you do even before your phone scroll or your cup of tea.
This helps jumpstart digestion, wake up your organs, and rehydrate your body after 6-8 hours of no fluids.

2. Infuse Your Water with Natural Flavors

Plain water can get boring, I get it. Try adding fruits, herbs, or spices to give it a flavor boost without sugar or artificial additives.
Here are some easy combos to try:

  • Cucumber + Mint
  • Pineapple + Ginger
  • Lemon + Basil
  • Orange + Clove

Keep a big jug in the fridge and sip it throughout the day it feels like a spa day in a glass!

Did you know that drinking more water actually reduces bloating? Yes! When you’re dehydrated, your body retains water. Drinking more actually signals it to release the excess.

3. Pair Water with Daily Habits (This Changes Everything!)

One of the most effective hacks is linking drinking water to things you already do:

  • After brushing your teeth
  • Before every meal
  • After every bathroom break
  • Every time you check your phone

It turns water into a natural part of your daily rhythm, not something you keep forgetting.

4. Use a Water Bottle You Love

Buy a reusable bottle that feels personal. Whether it’s pretty, motivational, or marked with time goals make it a bottle you want to carry around. It’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference in how consistent you are.
You can also set phone reminders or use free apps to gently nudge you throughout the day.

Simple Nutrition Tip:
Add 1 tablespoon of chia seeds to your water. Let them soak for 10–15 minutes. This chia water keeps you hydrated longer, helps with digestion, and keeps you fuller especially if you’re trying to reduce snacking.

5. Eat More Hydrating Foods (Water Isn’t Just in a Glass)

If you struggle to drink enough, don’t worry. You can also eat your water. Add water-rich fruits and veggies to your meals and snacks:

  • Watermelon
  • Cucumber
  • Oranges
  • Spinach
  • Strawberries

These foods are over 90% water and still count toward your daily hydration.

6. Track Your Progress Without Pressure

Sometimes we need to see our progress to feel proud. Use a journal, a printable tracker, or even a sticky note on your fridge. Tick off every glass like a reward. And if you miss your target one day? That’s okay. It’s about progress, not perfection.

7. Hydrate Before You Feel Thirsty

By the time you feel thirsty, you’re already mildly dehydrated. Sip water throughout the day don’t wait until you’re parched. If your lips feel dry or your urine is dark yellow, those are signs you need more water.

8. Turn It Into a Self-Care Ritual

Think of hydration as more than a chore. It’s an act of care. Just like how you treat your skin or cook nourishing meals—water is a way to love your body. Light a candle, pour yourself a glass with lemon, and make the moment feel intentional.
Hydration doesn’t need to feel like punishment. It should be easy, enjoyable, and something that fits into your real life. Start small. Build the habit slowly. And remember, every sip counts.
