What’s a skill you consider basic, that most people don’t actually know how to do?
If you asked 100 people this question, you’d probably hear answers like budgeting, cooking, or changing a tire.
But from a nutrition perspective, my answer is surprisingly simple:
Knowing how to build a balanced meal.
It sounds basic, yet many people have never been taught how to put together a meal that keeps them full, energized, and healthy.
Why Is It So Difficult?
Most of us grow up learning what to eat, but not how to combine foods. As a result, meals often end up being:
- Mostly carbohydrates with very little protein.
- Low in vegetables and fibre.
- Missing healthy fats.
- Too small to satisfy hunger—or too large without realizing it.
This can leave you feeling hungry soon after eating, constantly snacking, or struggling with weight and blood sugar control.
The Simple Plate Method
A balanced plate doesn’t require expensive foods or complicated recipes.
Aim for:
- ½ plate: Vegetables (such as sukuma wiki, spinach, cabbage, or traditional vegetables).
- ¼ plate: Protein (beans, eggs, fish, chicken, beef, milk, or lentils).
- ¼ plate: Healthy carbohydrates (ugali, rice, sweet potatoes, arrowroots, potatoes, or whole grains).
- Add a small amount of healthy fats like avocado, nuts, or seeds where possible.
Common Mistakes
- Eating carbohydrates alone.
- Skipping protein at meals.
- Avoiding vegetables because they seem boring.
- Believing healthy eating is expensive.
- Drinking sugary beverages with every meal.
Simple Tips You Can Start Today
- Add one serving of vegetables to lunch and dinner.
- Include a protein source every time you eat.
- Drink more water instead of sugary drinks.
- Plan your meals before you’re hungry.
- Focus on consistency rather than perfection.

Healthy eating isn’t about following strict diets. It’s about learning one of the most valuable life skills: building a balanced meal.
